What Is Veterans Day, and How Is It Different From Memorial Day?
Veterans Day is a U.S. federal holiday on November 11 that honors all who have served in the nation’s armed forces, in wartime and in peacetime. It grew out of the commemoration of the end of fighting in World War I in 1918 and is observed every year on the same date.
Memorial Day is a different occasion during Veterans Day 2026. It falls on the last Monday of May and honors military personnel who died while serving. Veterans Day is broader. It recognizes living veterans as well as those who have died, which is why ceremonies often include veterans’ organizations, color guards and public thank-yous alongside wreath layings.
If you visited Washington DC for the Veterans Day 2026 in Washington DC, you will notice the tone is a little different. Veterans Day events tend to be a mix of solemn ceremonies and community gatherings. For comparison, see our guide to the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington DC.
National Veterans Parade: Sunday, November 8
The Veterans Day 2026 in Washington DC Parade is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2026, on Constitution Avenue NW. DC’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency lists the location as Constitution Avenue between 7th and 23rd Streets and shows a time of 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The same agency lists a National Veterans Parade 5K on the same day from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., starting at Constitution Avenue and 7th Street NW.
Here is what to keep in mind if you plan to go:
- The parade is on the Sunday before Veterans Day, not on November 11 itself. If you are only in town on the holiday, you will miss it.
- Expect street closures. The event listing did not mention specific closures, so check DC’s official advisories in the days before the parade.
- Arrive early. Parade routes along Constitution Avenue are close to the National Archives, the National Mall and several museums, so the area can get busy.
- Contact the organizers for details. The listing names the National Veterans Parade Foundation at (202) 674-8490 for route and closure information.
One event listing also mentions a marching-band field show on the National Mall on Saturday, November 7 during the celebration of Veterans Day 2026 in Washington DC. We could not confirm that with an official source, so check with the organizers before you plan around it.
National Veterans Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery
The Veterans Day 2026 in Washington DC Observance takes place each year on November 11 at the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. The U.S. Army Military District of Washington sponsors the event, and the cemetery says it draws about 5,000 attendees during the Veterans Day 2026 in Washington DC.
The 2026 time, public access rules and parking details had not been published at the time of writing. Last year’s schedule gives a good idea of the general format:
- The ceremony began at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Amphitheater.
- The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” performed a prelude at 10:30 a.m.
- A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
- The program included a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries.
- The event was free and open to the public, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Attendees passed through a security checkpoint.
- Free parking was available at the Welcome Center lot from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- The cemetery warned of delays entering and leaving, and of movement freezes during the ceremony.
Treat this as a guide, not a confirmed schedule for 2026. Check Arlington National Cemetery’s website closer to the date, or call the cemetery at 877-907-8585.
If you are visiting Arlington on Veterans Day 2026, plan for crowds and extra time at the entrance. The cemetery also operates tram tours that, according to Washington.org, run hourly from the morning, though you should confirm the current schedule before you go during the Veterans Day 2026 in Washington DC.

Arlington National Cemetery announced that the U.S. Air Force Memorial and the surrounding area will temporarily close to visitors during Veterans Day 2026 in Washington DC starting on or about November 2, 2026, for utility and construction work. - Rangers and volunteers are on duty at the veterans memorials to answer questions.
- Bikes and scooters are welcome on the Mall, but riding is not allowed inside the memorials.

The World War II Memorial sits on the National Mall at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue. It was dedicated on May 29, 2004. Its 56 granite pillars represent the 48 states, the District of Columbia and eight U.S. territories, and the Freedom Wall holds 4,048 gold stars, each one representing 100 American lives lost in the war, which can be visited during the Veterans Day 2026 in Washington DC.

Korean War Veterans Memorial
The Korean War Veterans Memorial was dedicated on July 27, 1995. Nineteen stainless steel statues of soldiers move across a field, and their reflections in a polished black granite wall make it look as if there are 38 figures. A circular Pool of Remembrance honors those killed, wounded, missing in action or held as prisoners of war. A commemorative wall honoring those who served was added in 2022.
The memorial is slightly apart from the central axis of the Mall, so many visitors walk past it without realizing it is there. The black granite Wall lists more than 58,000 service members who died or remain missing. The names are arranged in the order they were lost, not alphabetically, so a visitor looking for a specific name will need a directory or a ranger’s help.
The Three Servicemen statue and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial were added after the Wall was dedicated and stand nearby. On Veterans Day, expect visitors to leave flags, flowers and letters at the Wall.
U.S. Navy Memorial
The U.S. Navy Memorial is in Penn Quarter next to the National Archives, at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. It honors the men and women of the sea services and is an easy stop if you are already downtown for the holiday. It has been the site of an annual wreath-laying ceremony in recent years.
National World War I Memorial

In recent years the Doughboy Foundation has sponsored the Bells of Peace ceremony here at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day, with prelude music starting around 10:45 a.m. The event has been free and open to the public. Confirm the 2026 details before you plan around it.
African American Civil War Memorial
The African American Civil War Memorial is at 1925 Vermont Avenue NW. It honors the African American soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil War. It sits outside the main National Mall area, which makes it a good addition if you want to go beyond the best-known sites.
American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial
The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial is near the U.S. Botanic Garden, in view of the U.S. Capitol. The nearest Metro stations are Federal Center SW and Capitol South. It honors veterans who were disabled in service across all branches of the military.

The National Native American Veterans Memorial is at the National Museum of the American Indian, within sight of the U.S. Capitol. It was unveiled on Veterans Day in 2020 and honors Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian veterans.
Memorials Across the Potomac
Two other major memorials are just across the Potomac River in Virginia: the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, known for its Iwo Jima flag-raising sculpture, and the U.S. Air Force Memorial. The Air Force Memorial is scheduled to close temporarily from about November 2, as noted above.
Other Ways to Honor Veterans in and Around DC
If you want something besides a ceremony, there are several other options.
- National Air and Space Museum. The museum’s new Modern Military Aviation gallery is listed to open on November 11. Admission is free, but timed passes are recommended or required, so reserve them ahead through the museum’s official ticketing page. The exhibition features artifacts such as the North American F-86 Sabre, the Bell UH-1H “Huey” and the General Atomics MQ-1L Predator.
- Mount Vernon. Washington.org lists Veterans Day programming at George Washington’s estate, including free admission for active, former and retired military. The listing does not give a year, so confirm the details on the Mount Vernon website.
- Military Women’s Memorial. An online event listing shows a Veterans Day program at the Military Women’s Memorial in Arlington at 3 p.m. on November 11. It comes from a third-party site, so confirm it with the memorial before you go.
- National Museum of American Jewish Military History. This museum in the Dupont Circle area has a core exhibit about Jews in the American military.
How to Plan Your Veterans Day in Washington DC
A bit of planning goes a long way on a holiday when many ceremonies overlap.
Get there early. Wreath-laying ceremonies and observances draw crowds, and security screening at Arlington can slow the line.
Skip the car if you can. The National Park Service has said parking at the memorials is extremely limited and gets worse on Veterans Day. Metro and rideshare are easier. Check WMATA for current service.
Pick a base area. The World War II, Korean War and Vietnam memorials are all on the western end of the Mall, so you can see them in one trip. The Navy Memorial and the World War I Memorial are downtown. Arlington is across the river and needs its own block of time.
Dress for the weather. Early November in Washington can be cool, and ceremonies are outdoors. Bring layers, a hat and comfortable shoes.
Respect the ceremonies. If you attend, stand quietly during the program, avoid walking through formations or reserved areas, and follow instructions from rangers and security staff.
Check access rules. Security checkpoints, bag restrictions and road closures can change. Look at the official sites for Arlington National Cemetery and the National Mall the day before.
Plan for accessibility. The World War II Memorial has wheelchair access, seating and restrooms. The Park Service also publishes accessibility guides for the monuments and memorials on the Mall.
